Ludington Area Fishing Reports
Get your line in the water! According to the Michigan DNR Charter Fishing Report, the Ludington area has the highest yearly yield of Chinook Salmon; 16,911 in 2007; in Western Michigan. Significantly higher than reported for the communities of Pentwater, Muskegon, Manistee and Petoskey.
Lake Michigan Fishing Reports
Fishing Lake Michigan provides some of the best fishing for steelhead, coho salmon, perch, chinook salmon, rainbow trout, lake trout, brown trout, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass and walleye in the Midwest.
Hamlin Lake Fishing Reports
Hamlin Lake is more than 12 miles long and 5,000 acres large. Hamlin Lake touches Manistee National Forest on the north, towering dunes in the west and miles of undeveloped wilderness all around. This man made lake originated during the logging hey-day when lumbermen dammed the Big Sable River to make an enormous holding pond for trees felled upstream.
Whether you traverse the bayous or head for deeper waters, Hamlin Lake offers a smorgasbord of fish. Tiger muskie, northern pike, large and small mouth bass, perch, crappie, blue gill and over 600,000 walleye, planted several years ago, promise a superb catch. The fishing doesn't cool down in winter either. Tip-ups and shanties dot the ice as fishermen pull in delicious panfish and walleye.
Pere Marquette Lake Fishing Reports
Located in Ludington the Pere Marquette Lake is the junction point between the Pere Marquette River and Lake Michigan. Pere Marquette Lake hosts a wide variety of fish all year round and is an excellent spot for ice fishing. Plenty of public access for onshore fishing as well as lauches and marinas for boat fishing.
Pere Marquette River Fishing Reports
The Pere Marquette River located in portions of Lake, Mason, Newaygo and Oceana counties, the Pere Marquette River system drains an area of approximately 740 square miles. Roughly 53 percent of the watershed is in Lake County. The mainstream starts at the confluence of the Middle Branch and Little South Branch, known as the "Forks" and flows in a westerly direction for approximately 67 miles to its mouth at Pere Marquette Lake, just south of the City of Ludington.
The Pere Marquette River has the reputation for being an outstanding steelhead and brown trout stream as well as being extremely popular with canoeists. The many outstanding natural values possessed by this river have resulted in 66.4 miles of the mainstream being proposed for inclusion under the Federal Wild and Scenic Rivers Act (PL 90542).
Ice Fishing Reports
Ice fishing is the activity of catching fish with lines and fish hooks or spears through an opening in the ice on a frozen body of water. Ice anglers may sit on the stool in the open on a frozen lake, or in a a structure often called an ice shanty, ice shack, fish house, shack, bobhouse, or ice hut. These are dragged or trailered onto the lake using a vehicle such as a snowmobile, ATV or truck.
In the Ludington area the most popular areas for ice fishing are Pere Marquette Lake and Hamlin Lake.
