Ludington State Park Temporary Closure

From September 3rd, 2024-July 1st, 2025, the Ludington State Park was closed for enhancements and renovations.

Improvements included re-working traffic/pedestrian flow at the entrance, paving the park’s main road and the Hamlin Lake day-use area parking lot, and adding parking at the Lake Michigan Beach House and warming shelter areas. In addition, there are future plans to renovate the Skyline Trail. The project was funded by the federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) COVID relief funds.

Skyline Trail Renovation

A favorite destination for hikers and nature lovers, the Skyline Trail at Ludington State Park is set to undergo a long-anticipated transformation. Thanks to a partnership between the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Friends of Ludington State Park, the scenic trail will soon receive a full-scale renovation.

The $3.5 million reconstruction project is scheduled to begin this fall, with completion expected in 2026. The improvements will bring the trail up to current safety and construction standards while preserving its breathtaking views of Lake Michigan.

As part of the effort, the Friends of Ludington State Park has committed to raising 10 percent of the total project cost—up to $350,000. The remainder will be funded by the DNR through designated capital outlay funds.

The project is expected to go out for bid later this season, with construction anticipated to begin in the fall and wrap up by late summer or early fall of next year.

The Friends of Ludington State Park group reports strong momentum in its fundraising efforts. So far, the group has contributed $50,000 of its own funds and secured an additional $212,000 from donors, bringing them close to their $350,000 goal. If the full amount is raised by September 30th, the organization will also receive a $50,000 contribution from Pennies from Heaven, which can be directed toward future park projects.

About the Skyline Trail

Winding for a half-mile along a wooded ridge, the Skyline Trail offers visitors an unforgettable experience high above the southern dunes of Ludington State Park. The elevated boardwalk reveals panoramic views of Lake Michigan, and on especially clear days, even the distant dunes of Silver Lake State Park come into view.

The trail’s staircases provide more than just a physical climb—they offer moments of reflection, inspiration, and connection. Supporters and donors have shared stories of the trail’s personal significance, from peaceful solo walks to joyful family hikes. The upcoming renovation is about more than infrastructure; it’s a commitment to preserving a cherished part of the park’s history and ensuring that future generations can create lasting memories along this iconic path.
