Ludington Earth Day Events

April 2026

Each April, AFFEW (A Few Friends for the Environment of the World) hosts an annual Earth Day event in Ludington.

The event is held at the Ludington United Methodist Church- 5810 E. Bryant Rd. from 10:30am-4pm. The 2024 theme is “Planet vs. Plastics” and the event includes a variety of speakers, informational booths representing the community and our partners, activities for children including a live reptile show and a guided hike, and tours of the U Dig It Community Garden located behind the church.

Here's what happened last year:

  • 10am – Doors Open
  • 10:30-11:30am – Singing & Drumming for Joy & for Spirit in the Lobby. Join a community drumming session led by Dave Stycos. With over 15 years of experience as a drummer and singer, Dave has led drumming for ceremonies of all sizes, both solo and in groups. 
  • 11am-2pm – Kids Activities in the Social Hall. Includes Story Time and book giveaway with Mason County Library, Reptiles and Amphibians Exhibit, Button making, Seed starting, and Bag decorating.
  • 11am-2pm – Earthly Treats by Dannee & Kay in the Social Hall. Quick and tasty food choices including a vegetarian option.
  • 11am-3pm – Informational Booths
  • 11:30am-12:30pm – Thrifted Threads Fashion Show in the Sanctuary. Models will showcase a diverse selection of stylish, affordable, secondhand clothing from local resale shops. After the show, all modeled outfits will be available for purchase. Participating businesses include Cedar Chest, Yada Yada Resale, ABC Kidz, St. Simon’s Bargain Center, Goodwill, Cup of Kindness, Moda-Elevated Fashion by My Sister’s Closet, and ECHO Resale.
  • 11:30am-1:30pm – Reptiles & Amphibians Exhibit 
  • 11:30am-2pm – U Dig It Community Garden Tour behind the church. Take a tour of UDICG, see the progress over the past few years, and learn about the programs offered.
  • 1-2pm – Presentation on The Power of Working Together with Dr. Erik Nordman in the Sanctuary. Dr. Erik Nordman is an environmental social scientist, climate resilience consultant with FEMA, and an adjunct professor of natural resources management at Grand Valley State University in Michigan. His research explores the social aspects of natural resource management, including energy, nature-based solutions, and the commons.
  • 2:15-3:15pm – Presentation on Reptiles and Amphibians in Children’s Room West. Nature Discovery, led by Dr. Jim McGrath and his wife Carol, maintains live specimens of many species native to Michigan for use in presentations and exhibits. 
  • 3:30-4:30pm – Guided Hike with Dave Dister beginning in front of the church. Dave Dister holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in botany from Miami University and a secondary education teaching certificate in biology and earth science from the University of Cincinnati. Since moving to Ludington in 2008, he has worked as a seasonal botanist for the Manistee National Forest and conducted a vascular plant survey of the 5,400-acre Ludington State Park.
